I have created this website for my high school English students to complete the common core standard 11-12.W.3.3 which requires them to be able to write a strong narrative essay that matches the criteria of their teachers’ content.
Standard 11-12.W.3.3: Write narrative compositions in a variety of forms that: • Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation and its significance, establishing one or multiple point(s) of view, and introducing a narrator and/or characters. • Create a smooth progression of experiences or events. • Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters. • Use a variety of techniques to sequence events so that they build on one another to create a coherent whole and build toward a particular tone and outcome (e.g., a sense of mystery, suspense, growth, or resolution). • Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters. • Provide an ending that follows from and reflects on what is experienced, observed, or resolved over the course of the narrative.
Learning Objectives: a.The students will be able to construct a five paragraph narrative essay. b.The students will learn about the characteristics of an effective personal narrative and will be able to differentiate a narrative essay from any other type of essay. c.The students will recall certain events, emotions and impacts of an experience that is personal to them. d.The student will write about their experience using affirmed details. The students will eventually write their final narrative essay that has all of the aspects we discussed in class. The students will need a solid 5 paragraph narrative that has a detailed introduction, 3 strong body paragraphs that show, NOT TELL, a story with great descriptive words, and a conclusion that ties the whole essay together with a purpose.
